Worry, Be Happy!
How does Saturn show Up In Your Life?
Saturn was the
original god before Jupiter deposed him. Saturn begat all the other
gods. He organized everything; he planned the whole community; he
financed all the businesses. Saturn made all the rules—he
sat as judge on the throne.
One day Saturn
visited the oracle. The oracle was known for not being 100% accurate
and for not necessarily speaking in literal terms. Saturn was a
very black and white guy, so when the oracle told him that he would
be deposed by one of his children he took the news completely literally,
became totally insecure, freaked out, and started eating his children!
Saturn
had a tendency to focus on the morose. So when given the choice
of being open to a possible positive outcome, he chose to focus
on the worst-case scenario instead and then proceeded to take the
only steps that he could see to prevent that outcome.
The archetype
of Saturn is used to illustrate a number of traits, strengths, and
challenges. We will focus on three: the concepts of security and
faith, and the fact that there is always a third way.
In the above
story about Saturn, security was his primary issue. He was faced
with the fact of life’s instability and that was unacceptable
to him.
Saturn is known
as the taskmaster and a primary word associated with him is inflexibility.
Saturn’s inflexibility and insecurity about a possible change
in the structure of his life caused him to act rashly and abrasively—Saturn
is also known as the grim reaper….
If you are worried
about security, you may do things you do not really want to do,
like staying at a job you hate because it offers a regular paycheck,
instead of taking the risk of self-employment. Because of this worry
around security, you may also be unwilling to take other risks you
need to in order to be happier. Saturn represents both the worry
and the risk-taking—they are opposite ends of the same spectrum
in a way. What is required to move from worry to risk is faith.
The faith that, as you take care of yourself, as you follow your
heart, you will be taken care of. Also, the faith that as you take
care of yourself, those around you will be taken care of as they
need to be.
I share my version
of Patrick Overton’s poem to illustrate what I mean by faith
and how we need to work with it in our lives:
As you come
to the edge of all of the light that you know
And are about to jump off into the darkness of the unknown
Faith is knowing that one of two things will happen
There will either be something solid to stand on
Or you will be taught how to fly
If you are employing
the demonstration of faith, you will automatically be open to the
fact that there is always a third way. You will see that things
are not just black and white, all or nothing, good or bad, right
or wrong. There is somewhere in between. There is gray. There is
different, there just is.
Moving from
tunnel vision to being open to the third way is Saturn’s challenge.
If he had had faith and truly followed his heart instead of being
ruled by his fears and insecurities, he would have been open to
the possibility of a different outcome and then would not have created
the need for one of his children to dispose him.
By focusing
on insecurity, a self-fulfilling prophecy of insecurity is created.
As the demonstration of faith is continually carried out, it may
not look like you want it to or expect it to immediately, but eventually,
it will be better than you dream.
