Dynamics Goes To NYC
New York City, the Big
Apple, what an exciting place to be! So many things to do, so many
places to go, all the diverse people to see—it was a four
day whirlwind tour, but what fun!
Day
One: We arrived and took a shuttle to our friend’s
apartment at 96th and Columbus—a block off Central Park. We
dragged our luggage up four flights of stairs (no elevator!), dropped
the bags there and headed up to the rooftop garden to take a snooze
in the NYC sun at 11 am. It had been doing nothing but raining in
Northern California, so while New York may not be known for it’s
sunny disposition, it sure felt good on that day!
After a nap
and feeling a little more refreshed, we hopped on the subway and
headed down to Greenwich Village for the afternoon. We popped into
Chumley’s and were immersed in the history and activity of
this prohibition era establishment responsible for the term, “being
86’d” (from a club). When it was a speakeasy, Chumley’s
had two entrances. When the prohibition police would come in the
main door to raid the place the clientele would run out the other
door that let out onto 86th street, thus creating that now famous
phrase.
Lunch was excellent
hamburgers at the Blue Mill restaurant there in the Village—highly
recommended.
Returning to
meet our friends, we had dinner in, (NY Pizza of course!) then went
to a comedy review at Gotham Comedy Club. It was a very sparse audience
(it was Tuesday night after all), but the comics were all very good
for the most part. We took the subway there, but our friends advised
us to cab it home.
Day
Two: The village is a marvelous place to walk around and
experience some of the history of this great city, but a trip to
NYC would not be complete without a visit to Times Square! We went
several different times on this trip and I recommend going either
before noon or after the sun goes down, because in between, it’s
just an uncomfortable jostle of wall to wall people moving in baby
steps - not very fun.
Our requisite
theatre experience was a matinee of Sweeny Todd (the Demon Barber
of Fleet Street), which was an excellent production.
We met our friends
at Lucille’s for an early dinner and then headed to the 91st
Street Y for a blues show—what fun and good leg-slappin’
music!
Day
Three: It was off to the Avenue of the Americas to see
Radio City Music Hall and its surrounding neighborhood. It was great
entertainment to visit this area! There were some of the most fancy
and expensive establishments on the planet there, but there was
also some remarkable architecture, statuary, and artwork to look
at for free, as well as some really good bargains to be found at
places in between.
Our next stop
was Central Park near Columbus Circle. More eye candy in architecture
and statuary as well as entertainment when we stopped to watch the
street performers doing tricks and jumps and tumbles. And there
was a cart there that had the best prices on T-shirts and sweatshirts
that we found.
Day
Four: To top off our trip we took a three-hour boat ride
around Manhattan Island. This was definitely the highlight of the
trip! Our tour guide was very entertaining as well as knowledgeable
and next time we are doing this attraction first!
It had been
about 30 years since my last trip to NYC. Obviously, the city had
changed since my last visit, but so had I. We are both older and
better! I will not let so many years pass before my next trip there
again.
