ON BEING PASSIONATELY POWERFUL

In the last newsletter we briefly touched on the concept of power. I’d like to expand on that concept in this article.

Just to remind you, “I want” + ‘Action’ = power. In order to get what you want, you have to know what you want. That’s what we’re going to talk about here today.

Knowing what you want requires presence. Presence means that you are fully inhabiting your body and your heart; you are in touch with your soul desires. When I use the phrase “I want” I’m not talking about a child throwing a tantrum for a piece of candy; I’m talking about really being in touch with who you are and giving yourself permission to be as big energy as you need to be in order to fully express who you are.

The phrase “I want” is the heart of passion and passion lives in your heart. Presence + Permission = the expression of Passion. So we can modify the earlier equation of power from “I want” + Action = Power to read Passion + Action = Power. So, being powerful means taking action on your passions.

How do you know what you want?
In order to get in touch with and the way to tap into your passion is by being fully present. The way that you get present, is through the breath. Do you hold your breath? Are you a shallow breather?

If you are holding your breath you are not in your body, you are not present to yourself. When you are breathing shallowly, you are barely getting into your body and then escaping immediately. Deep conscious breaths = Presence.

Do you have a practice of meditation or prayer or some centering and grounding technique that you use regularly to bring yourself into presence? If you’re like most people, it’s hard to find the time for that kind of activity and if you do give yourself the time, it’s too hard to sit still or to quiet your mind. I highly recommend challenging yourself to develop a practice of spending at least 10 minutes a day at least 4 days a week (so that you’re doing it more days than you’re not) taking deep conscious breaths.

In working your way up to that commitment, here’s an exercise that most people can employ immediately with a minimal amount of resistance. It was given to me by one of my wise teachers and caused huge results in my life. As I have, in turn, passed this exercise on to my clients, many have experienced the same huge results.

As often as you can throughout the day, stop whatever it is that you are doing and consciously take three nice deep breaths. At the end of those breaths take just another few seconds to ask yourself three questions: “What am I feeling? What do I need? What do I want?” You may or may not get answers. If you get answers, pay attention to them and do the best that you can to honor them. If you don’t get answers, don’t worry about it. The idea here is to develop a practice of checking in with yourself, so that you can more readily get in touch with what it is that you want—your passion.

Again, Passion + Action = Power. In order to get what you want, you have to know what you want. In order to know what you want, you have to be present to yourself. And the way that you achieve presence is through deep conscious breaths. Just give it a try for a committed period of time, say, 6 weeks and see what happens for you.
